2018 Municipal Elections

The 2018 Municipal Election will be held on October 22, 2018.

The West Elgin 2018 Municipal Election will be conducted using Internet and Telephone Voting, as well as by traditional paper ballot on Voting Day.  ​Advanced Voting days will run from October 11, 2018 to October 21, 2018 for internet and telephone voting and during business hours at the Municipal Office.

The Municipal Clerk is the Returning Officer for the Election and questions in respect to elections should be directed to the Clerk's Office.  You can contact the Municipal Office for any information at 519-785-0560 or email vote@westelgin.net

​Email vote@westelgin.net or call 519-785-0560 to find out if you are on the Voters' List.  

If you need to correct information or be added to the Voter's List please fill out the Application to Amend Voters' List Form and return this form to the Municipal Office at 22413 Hoskins Line during business hours.  Ensure that you bring identification that provides proof of residency and age.  (See List of acceptable Identification)

Who Can Vote?

A person is entitled to vote in a municipal election if he or she on voting day,

·         resides in the local municipality, or is the owner or tenant of land in the municipality, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and

·         is a Canadian citizen; and

·         is at least 18 years old; and

·         is not prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise prohibited by law

Who Cannot Vote?

The following cannot vote:

·         a person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment in penal or correctional institution;

·         a corporation;

·         a person acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity, except as a voting proxy in a traditional election;

·         a person who was convicted of the corrupt practice described in subsection 90 (3), if voting in the current election is less than five years after voting day in the election in respect of which her or she was convicted.

All voters should ensure that their names and relevant information are correct on the Voters' List.  To be added, deleted or to make any other corrections to your information, contact or visit the Municipal Office at 22413 Hoskins Line Rodney, ON, 519-785-0560, during regular business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm).  Please ensure you bring proper identification and proof of residence along with the Application to Amend Voter's List form.

​Nominations Closed at 2 pm on Friday July 27, 2018.

Significant changes were made to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 after the 2014 municipal elections:

  • there are new rules regulating third party advertising
  • municipalities now have the option to used ranked ballots to elect their councils
  • nominations to run for municipal council or school trustee may be filed with the municipal clerk beginning May 1, 2018, and may be filed until 2 p.m. on July 27, 2018
  • candidates running for council  must submit 25 endorsement signatures when they file their nomination

Third Party Advertisers

Recent changes to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 created a framework of rules for third party advertising. This guide provides information about who can register to be a third party advertiser, what registration allows them to do, and the rules that third party advertisers must follow.

​What is a Third Party Advertiser?

Third party advertising refers to advertisements or other materials that support, promote or oppose a candidate, or support, promote or oppose a “yes” or “no” answer to a question on the ballot. Third party in this context is a person or entity who is not a candidate.

Third party advertising is separate from any candidate’s campaign, and must be done independently from a candidate. Any advertisements or materials that are made and distributed by a candidate, or under a candidate’s direction, are part of the candidate’s campaign.

Third party advertising is a way for those outside of the candidate’s campaign to express support of or opposition to candidates (or a “yes” or “no” answer to a question on the ballot) and to try to persuade voters to vote a certain way.

A third party advertisement is an advertisement in any broadcast, print, electronic or other medium that promotes, supports or opposes a candidate, or a “yes” or “no” answer to a question on the ballot. Advertisement includes traditional ads as well as materials such as brochures or signs.

The Municipal Elections Act places responsibility on the Clerk to have regard to the needs of the electors and candidates with disabilities.  Accessible Customer Service Standards must be followed when conducting municipal elections. West Elgin municipal elections will be conducted in a manner that shall ensure that Candidates and electors with disabilities have full and equal access to all election information and services, including the voting kiosk at the municipal office.
