Phragmites - Aggressive Weeds

What is Phragmites?

Phragmites is a highly aggressive grass which can grow up to six meters tall. Once established, it spreads underground through it's root system forming dense stands with up to 200 stems per square metre. Phragmites has spread beyond wetlands and can be found in ditches, ponds, and creeks through Southern Ontario. Phragmites can also spread via seed and root and have been known to even take over drier areas, such as beaches and dunes, as long as the root can reach water.

These stands replace open water, blocking wildlife movement, reducing biodiversity by replacing native plants and overtaking important habitat. Which will also impact recreational areas.

Hot Cars Can Kill

Hot Cars Can Kill.

Even with the window down your pet can overheat in a matter of mintues.

Why Pets and Vehicles Don't Mix:

  • A dog has a normal body temperature of about 30 º C (102º F).  Unlike people, a dog has a limited ability to sweat to cool off.  So even a brief time in a hot environment can be life threatening.
  • Even on a minld day, with the windows open and parked in the shade, the temperature in a vehicle can rapidly reach very dangerous levels
  • After reading a body temperature of 41º  C, it doesn't take long for a pet to begin suffering irreparable braing damage or death.
  • Every summer, too many pets are left in life threatening situations inside hot vehicles.  But there is something you can do about it:
ACT FAST.  SAVE A LIFE.  If you find a pet unattended in a hot vehicle call your local police department.
